Greenbush

Southern Mentawai Islands

A swift and shallow wave, tailor-made for tube enthusiasts. This ultra-hollow, high-speed tube is a rare gem, requiring the unique convergence of spring high tides and a moderate S-SW swell meeting a N quadrant wind.

Experience a vertical drop, execute a stall for the barrel, then accelerate as the wave coils over an increasingly shallow reef. While it may either spit you out in the channel or slam the door shut, the safer bet is to stay within the barrel rather than attempting to straighten out.

Thunders

Southern Mentawai Islands

Operational in all size ranges, offering speedy barrel sections that can manifest up the reef during a moderate S swell, this spot becomes the prime choice when other locations are experiencing flat conditions. Undoubtedly, it stands out as the most dependable left in the Mentawai.

Optimal wind conditions range from southeast to southwest, with a south wind being the ideal direction, providing more or less offshore winds.

The Hole

Southern Mentawai Islands

Situated on the western edge of diminutive Saumang Island and nestled behind the southern tip of Pagai Selatan, this exceptionally hollow left initiates its barrel right from the takeoff, persisting until it culminates in a closeout section at the reef’s end.

For entry, a strongly southerly swell is essential, coupled with northeast to east winds or an absence of wind altogether. During high tide, the takeoff shifts to a shallower section further up the reef.

Macarroni's

Southern Mentawai Islands

Earning the title of the world’s most enjoyable wave, affectionately known as “Macca’s,” its unwavering reliability places it among the finest lefts in tropical surfing destinations. Resembling more of a man-made marvel than a natural reef formation, it kicks off with an immaculate pipe section and frequently concludes with a precisely defined quarter pipe wall.

“Macca’s” is akin to a machine-operated amusement park, offering a lineup of thrilling rides for surfers to enjoy.

Lances Right (HT’s)

Central Mentawai Islands

Perched atop a coral reef, this extraordinary right-hander is a marvel of nature. Atop the coral platform, The Office section inhales sharply, inviting the next fortunate expert to be present when it exhales deeply. The wave then propels through the Main Peak, culminating in the shallowness of the Surgeons Table in the inside.

Optimal conditions for perfection include a 6-8ft S-SW swell, light W or no wind, and a minimum of 2 hours of tide.

Lances Left

Central Mentawai Islands

Characterized by its superb consistency and an extended left wall, this enchanting wave graces the base of Sipura island. With the ideal easterly wind and a hint of southerly swell, up to three distinct sections emerge, offering anything from small lumpy walls to high-speed barrels at the reef’s top, center, and tail.

The concluding section strikes a delicate balance between breathtakingly hollow and challenging to navigate – a moment to exit the wave while the conditions are favorable.

Bintang

Central Mentawai Islands

Situated just across the bay from Lances Left, Bintang offers an enjoyable and manageable slab. While it may not handle excessive size, during the right conditions, it transforms into a slab with a thrilling take-off barrel section that transitions into a curvaceous and exhilarating wall, delivering a remarkable amount of fun per meter.

When unruly north winds disrupt other surf spots, Bintang shines as a go-to destination.

Telescope

Central Mentawai Islands

From the anchorage, the wave appears deceptively easy, but it consistently proves to be larger and faster than anticipated on the drop. With a sharp take-off, surfers gain access to a flawless and consistent tube section, followed by a powerful wall that leads to a bend in the coral shelf, inviting exploration of the next slot.

This wave thrives with a touch of westerly swell, and an ideal epic session is often found during mid-tide conditions.

Burguerworld

Northern Mentawai Islands

A welcoming intermediate point break nestled near the lush jungle isle, this spot features a rocky reef platform that crafts playful little rights—ideal for executing snap and cutback combinations or even a small punt.

It’s the go-to destination when the swell vanishes, and the wind aligns from the west to north.

Kandui

Northern Mentawai Islands

Challenging and requiring technical prowess, this wave stands as one of the swiftest left-hand barrels globally. Optimal conditions include a southwest swell, gentle easterly wind, mid to high tide, and faces of at least 8 feet, as the reef can be unforgiving in smaller conditions.

The majority of waves prove too swift for paddling in, and some of the largest bombs necessitate tow-ins from well beyond the back.

Rifles

Northern Mentawai Islands

Designed for turbo-charged advanced surfers exclusively, riders must embrace a mentality faster than a speeding bullet to stay ahead of the foamball. Ideal conditions include slack or light northwest wind, a southerly swell, avoiding low tide, and a wave height that approaches double overhead—forming the perfect dream wave for regular-footed surfers.
